Waking up with a stiff neck

Gentle movement, pillow position and warning signs that need assessment.

If it hurts to turn your head in the morning, recall how you slept, your posture the day before and any recent injury.

Avoid forcing a stretch

Move within a comfortable range rather than twisting or massaging forcefully. Check whether your pillow pushes your chin towards your chest.

Recognize warning signs

Seek assessment after an injury or for arm tingling or weakness. A stiff neck with fever and severe headache, or sudden difficulty speaking, needs emergency evaluation.

What a visit involves

We examine neck and shoulder movement and may use ultrasound when indicated. Treatment is individualized; tell the clinician about blood thinners before a procedure.
